Stocks in Asia rebound following Wall Street lead

SYDNEY, Australia - Stocks in Asia firmed on Thursday, after Wall Street rebounded on positive trade comments by President Trump.

In Japan the Nikkei 225 rose 164.86 points or 0.71% to 23,300.09.

The Australian All Ordinaries jumped 76.70 points or 1.14% to 6,791.10.

On foreign exchange markets, the U.S. dollar was little changed. The euro was steady at 1.1080. The British pound inched higher to 1.3108. The Japanese yen was unchanged at 108.82.

The Swiss franc firmed a tad to 0.9876.

The Canadian dollar edged up to 1.3188. The Australian dollar drifted down to 0.6839.

The New Zealand dollar was a touch weaker at 0.6534.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 146.97 points, or 0.53%, to 27,649.78.

The Standard and Poor's 500 added 19.57 points, or 0.63%, to 3,112.77.

The Nasdaq Composite advanced 46.03 points, or 0.54%, to 8,566.67.
