American Top Team coach Mike Brown will not be able to corner Jorge Masvidal at his UFC 251 title bout on Saturday night after testing positive for COVID-19.
Brown tested positive earlier this week and did not make the trip to Abu Dhabi to coach Masvidal, an 11th-hour replacement for the welterweight title bout against Kamaru Usman.
"Just heartbroken I'm not going to see Jorge win the world championship in person," Brown told ESPN on Tuesday. "Nobody deserves it more than this guy. Nobody has paid more dues. Jorge is also one of the most thoughtful athletes I've ever met. He makes everyone feel they are with him and a huge part of this journey."
"As far as being COVID positive, I feel good. The only pain I feel is in my heart," added the 44-year-old Brown, himself a former World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion.
Masvidal agreed to take the bout with Usman after Gilbert Burns had to bow out because he tested positive for the virus.
ESPN reports Masvidal intends to replace Brown with a fourth corner but has not yet decided who that will be.
